The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system routes a portion of exhaust gases back into the engine's intake manifold. The intention is to dilute the fresh air charge and reduce peak combustion temperatures, which lowers the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the exhaust.

In theory, this sounds straightforward. In practice, it means your engine is deliberately contaminating its own intake air with hot, sooty exhaust gases. Over time, this creates some of the most common and costly reliability problems in modern diesel engines, particularly in the high-load, dusty, and variable-temperature conditions typical of Australian agricultural and mining operations.

Carbon Buildup in the Intake

Hot exhaust gases carry soot and oil vapour. When routed back through a cooled EGR system, this mixture condenses and deposits thick carbon layers inside the intake manifold, EGR cooler, and intake ports. Over time, airflow is restricted and combustion quality degrades significantly.

EGR Cooler Failure

The EGR cooler is a heat exchanger that uses engine coolant to cool the recirculated exhaust. Carbon fouling, thermal cycling, and the corrosive nature of exhaust gases cause EGR coolers to crack and fail, allowing coolant to enter the intake. This is a catastrophic failure mode that can destroy an engine quickly.

What EGR Delete Does
for Your Machine

EGR delete is an ECU software modification that disables the EGR system entirely. The ECU no longer opens the EGR valve or monitors EGR feedback. The engine breathes only clean, fresh air. Carbon buildup in the intake stops immediately. EGR cooler failure becomes impossible.

Typically performed alongside a full ECU remap, the delete allows the engine to be tuned more aggressively for power and efficiency without the complications of re-circulated exhaust gas disrupting combustion calculations.

Do I need to block off the EGR valve physically, or is software enough?

The ECU modification closes the EGR valve permanently in software and disables all EGR monitoring. For a cleaner installation, physically blocking the valve prevents any mechanical creep. We can advise on the best approach for your specific machine during the free consultation.

Will EGR delete improve fuel economy?

Yes, in most cases. Cleaner intake air means more complete combustion, which extracts more energy from each litre of diesel. Engines that were already throttled back by EGR-related faults often see significant fuel improvements after the delete and remap.

Can EGR delete be done alongside DPF delete and a remap?

Yes, this is our Combo service and it is the most cost-effective option for farm and mining machinery. The DPF delete, EGR delete, and ECU remap are completed in a single on-site visit. Combo price is $4,500 + GST.

My EGR valve has already failed. Can you still delete it?

Yes. We frequently perform EGR deletes on machines that have already experienced EGR failure. The delete eliminates the fault codes, prevents recurrence, and allows the engine to be optimised through a remap. In many cases, this is less expensive than replacing the EGR valve.
